Frequently Asked Questions

What will my involvement look like?

We will start with an initial confidential phone conversation to confirm if you’re comfortable sharing your story for this project and book. If you choose to proceed, I’ll ask you to complete a Consent and Waiver Form. After that, we will have a confidential discussion—either in person or online (e.g., via Zoom)—about your story and the wisdom you’d like to share. This is likely to be a one-off conversation, but I may need to contact you again if there’s more information needed.

How much of my time will I need to give?

The initial phone call may take around 30 minutes. The in-person or online conversation is expected to take one to two hours.

Can I change my mind about participating?

Yes, your participation is entirely voluntary, and you can withdraw at any stage. In the latter stages of the book’s production, the publishers may set a cut-off period where no further changes can be made.

Will my story be included in the book?

All stories shared are valuable. While I hope to include every story, it may not be possible to include them all in the final version of the book.

How do you know this will be picked up by a publisher?

I will do everything within my power to secure a publisher, but some factors are beyond my control. Although I cannot guarantee publication, I am fully committed to making this project a reality. Either way, I will keep you updated on the outcome.

How will you keep my information confidential?

I will use best endeavours to maintain confidentiality while using the information for the purposes of this project and book. I’ll be recording our conversations to capture your words accurately. Recordings will be stored on my password-protected laptop, with strict password control over the storage of files. If we use Zoom or another online platform, I will record only the audio, without referencing your name during the recording.

Will I be anonymous?

Yes, I will change all names and use best endeavours to alter any identifying information to protect your anonymity.

Why are you writing the book?

I want to shine a light on the dark topic of sexual violence. As long as it remains a taboo subject, survivors will continue to suffer in silence. My hope is to ease the recovery journey for others by sharing stories that show they are not alone and that there is support and wisdom from those who have walked a similar path.

What if in telling the story I find I need help in dealing with the painful memories?

I understand that even for those who have travelled a long way in their recovery, this can still be a difficult and emotional topic. Please know that the support services listed on the Finding Help page are available for you. If at any time you decide you do not wish to continue, that is completely understandable, and you are free to stop at any point.

Are you a therapist or counsellor?

No, I am not a therapist or counsellor. I can offer compassion and respect based on my life experiences, but I’m not able to provide therapeutic advice. For this reason, it’s ideal if participants already have a support system in place.

Are you writing this book for financial gain?

No, I do not intend for this book to be a source of financial gain. If a publisher picks up the book, I plan to donate a portion (or all) of the royalties to a suitable charity or not-for-profit organisation.

Where will we meet to have the conversation?

We will decide this together, taking into account privacy, safety, and geographical considerations.

How long will you keep my information for before destroying it?

The timeline for publication is uncertain and may take several years. I may need to retain your information for up to five years post-publication.

Will the book be called ‘Wisdom of Survivors’?

This is the current working title, but it may change based on editorial or publisher input. I welcome your suggestions for a suitable name.

Why do you need to record the discussions?

Research shows that multitasking detracts from our ability to focus. I want to fully engage in our conversation without needing to take notes, ensuring I can give you my full attention and capture your story accurately.

Will I get to review my story as it appears in the book before it is published?

If possible, I would like you to review your story before publication. If a publisher provides a strict timeframe, we’ll need to work together promptly to meet those deadlines.

Will You Be Speaking Publicly About The Book?

Yes, I may speak publicly about the book and my story, as well as the broader project. I will continue to respect your anonymity in all communications.

Will you / how will you keep me up to date with how the book is progressing?

I will provide updates as required. I’ll ask you to opt-in to receive updates through your preferred communication method.

Can I tell other people about the Wisdom of Survivors' project and book?

Absolutely. Please feel free to share information about the project.

I’m willing to participate, what’s the next step?

The next step is a confidential conversation with me.  Please contact me:
